HOUSE OF CULTURE

This building is located in the Old Town of Rethymnon, west of the Nerantze Mosque. It faces N. to Bernardou Street and to the N. in the common area located west of the yard of the 1st Primary School of Rethymnon. Part of the accompanying buildings of the Augustinian monastery of SANTA MARIA (its adjacent katholikon, which was converted by the Turks into a mosque in 1657, is the current Conservatory), were converted to residencies during Turkish rule and until the first quarter of the last century. The first cinema of Rethymno with the name "APOLLON" operated in a part of it.
The complex was rebuilt to operate for cultural purposes ("House of Culture") with a large multipurpose room that is complemented by permanent or periodic exhibition halls and has a stage, dressing rooms and auxiliary spaces, used for theatrical and other performances, screenings, lectures. conferences and other events.
